Ribbing is a stretchy stitch with defined ridges. It's most commonly used for cuffs, bands, collars, etc. It creates an elastic like effect where when not stretched the circumference or width of the fabric is smaller than non-ribbed fabric with the same number of stitches. There are many ways of making ribbing and patterns will specify what you need to do.
